What do you get when you combine a blind stripper, a battery acid energy drink, a robot, a PowerPoint prank, and a news segment?
You get a fabulous edition of The Farce Side Comedy Hour! I had to open this review in a clever way. Speaking of, the opening was a hoot. All of the new guys being featured as glorified lackeys, nice.
“Texas Institute of Technology and Sciences, or T.I.T.S.”
There was some general silliness here, also elements of surreal comedy. Of course the abbreviation of the school was a nice touch. At times I felt it used absurd comedy, because the concept of the institute seemed so ridiculous. I enjoyed it.
“Instant Crazy Energy”
Hmm, an energy drink with battery acid? No, that’s not crazy at all. The sketch took the form of a pitch meeting. I was expecting a commercial for a sketch like this. Thanks for taking a different step.
One of the newcomers - Stephanie Kost - did a good job selling her character. All that twitching she did wasn’t too over the top. Nice job.
“Blind Stripper”
Some observational comedy, taking an everyday concept of a stripper and making her blind? After everything I’ve seen you’d think I would’ve seen that coming. Good going Audrey.
“Robot 5000”
I guess this would be called Alternative comedy. A robot tries to fit in to everyday life, but it doesn’t go as expected. One of the examples of how distinctive the material was in this show.
“PowerPoint Penis”
Judging from the audience reaction, the performances, and the overall craziness of this piece, this could be considered the best sketch of the show. I have to admit, sometimes when I did PowerPoint presentations when I went to ASU, I thought of inserting something funny. Not a penis, but something stupid. I had to settle for adding transitions and effects I thought would get a reaction.
Farce Side has been coming along nicely since the exodus. They really turned in sketches that were very distinctive. Richie looks like he’s got some real potential, and Mike Margetis has been turning in some good performances. I see a 10 rating in the future.
My final score is 9.15 out of 10.
Although this is a Farce Side review, I would like to say that the 9/24 Barren Mind was also an amazing treat. The new “Press Conference” guessing game was a welcome addition. I also think that Ben was decent in his first outing, and would like to see him ascend to the regular cast soon.
Barren Mind started in 1994. Shouldn’t there be a show to celebrate how long it’s been around?
