For a few weeks now, I've been asked whether I'm giving to give a Farce Side show a 10 out of 10 score.
After seeing the April 23 show, I had decided on the score, and it wasn't a 10. Now that I've had time to think about, maybe that was premature. Did Farce Side deserve a 10?
We shall see...
"My Future"
Stephanie plays a girl who gets a look at her future, and it's very good. Instead of actually moving towards that future, she sits and waits for it to happen. Can you guess where that led? She wastes her life, in a hilarious way, and then she turns into Mike Margetis for some reason.
This is why Stephanie has been on Farce Side for years.
"Honors Kids"
I've seen it many times. Somebody fucks up and not only does he avoid punishment, someone else takes the rap.
Loved it!
"I Can't Do This!"
If you saw this one, I'm sure you won't forget how it ended.
Hayley is trying to do something on her laptop, and Jamie keeps pestering her in some form. You see Hayley getting frustrated, and finally she yanks her shirt off in a fit of rage.
What Hayley did undoubtedly took us all by surprise. She was already giving a good performance, but I was impressed that she was willing to take her shirt off to sell the story.
"Groundhog Day"
It started with "Everybody Plays the Fool," continued with "Life Comes at You Fast," and it ended here.
Towards the end, Danny kills Sam, and you expect the whole thing to reverse and fix itself, but it doesn't happen immediately. Swerve! Sam is alive again.
The title should tell you the plot device Sam and Danny used. I think that this sketch was a little slow-paced, which is something that Farce Side needs to work on.
"Pagan Jingles"
If you saw this, you probably thought to yourself, did they really go there?
This sketch chose to bastardize several Christian songs, and even threw in some Hannibal Lecter-esque behavior. I think that this is a reason why I keep coming back. Farce Side can still be risky and push the envelope.
When I gave Farce Side its first 10 rating, I can remember that show being so good because it took risks, had interesting sketches, and did not lose energy. During the "Paranoid Dad" and "Groundhog Day" scenes, I thought the pace had slowed.
After weighing it all in my head, I've come to a conclusion. Farce Side did not fail at being entertaining. They took risks. They tried something different in the "News," which involved Richie and Carly tying Sam and Stephanie up and impersonating them. They did all that to entertain us and give us a great show, and we don't even pay for this.
So...
My final score is 10 out of 10.
