Again, my apologies for taking a while with a review, but in my defense, reviewing this particular show is never easy for me.
“Bad Robber”
If this was Richie’s last show, I’m glad this was used. The one thing I’ve always liked about him was his writing skill. He wouldn’t be on Farce Side if he couldn’t perform, but clearly his greatest strength was his content. Score: 9.45 out of 10.
“Distracted Soldiers”
I’m still sickened when I see Ryan stumble in coughing up “blood,” but the observational humor and use of YouTube made up for it big-time. I felt like they sprinkled in sitcom humor here. Score: 9.75 out of 10
“Golden Ticket”
I recall having seen Willy Wonka a few times as a kid. Still, I don’t think Roald Dahl ever had this in mind. To be honest, I didn’t vote for it, but I wasn’t complaining about seeing it again. Score: 8.0 out of 10.
“Cig Bum”
I‘ve been thinking about it, and it‘s occurred to me that this very short sketch was a missed opportunity. It just feels like Ryan could‘ve done more, expanded on it. It didn‘t happen. Score: 7.5 out of 10.
“Epic Man”
While I wasn’t impressed with “Cig Bum” I loved this one. Nice job Ryan.
For the uninformed, the musical piece used here - “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” - was used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and functions as its theme song in a way. Could you display making a sandwich, using the restroom, and taking someone doggy style in an epic way? Except for that last one, yes. Score: 10 out of 10.
“Harry Potter / Sex-ed at Hogwarts”
All I have to say is that it will be a sad day when Stephanie is done with Farce Side. Score: 9 out of 10.
“Saw of Fortune”
Has SNL ever made fun of Saw? How do you lampoon a horror movie series like this one?
Skarsten’s reactions were somewhat forced. That was the only downside, but I’m not complaining about the subject matter. Turning Saw into a game show was genius! Score: 9.25 out of 10.
“2001”
Why?
I asked myself that the first time I witnessed this. I easily picked up on the 2001 references, and obviously wondered, “are they gonna go there?” They did. You know exactly what I’m talking about, and it ain’t the movie I mentioned.
Every so often, it’s good to take a risk. I’m happy that Farce Side didn’t do this sooner, or there would’ve been hell to pay. Score: 9.25 out of 10.
“Bob Dylan”
Do a Beatles sketch, please! Apple has been buzzing about The Beatles being on iTunes. It could work.
Both Richie and Mike Skarsten as Scott Stapp and Richie Tolway, respectively, were so good! Richie kinda sounded like Stapp when he sings, and Skarsten proved that he can bring it, again. Score: 10 out of 10.
“Strange Therapy”
This was another testing the waters sketch. I’ll give it praise for originality, but please don’t do it again. Score: 8.5 out of 10.
“Zombie party guest”
So we got two Halloween sketches in the show. That is rare. Score: 8.75 out of 10.
This was the last show for Eric Wheeler and Richie Tolway. For the second semester in a row, we find someone - Eric - who is leaving when he just got here. Still, I can remember him taking part in some of the more memorable moments in the last semester, so I'll miss him.
Why did Richie stand out? Here's one reason: he (with Mike Margetis) managed to accomplish two 10 ratings during his time as director. If you're on Farce Side, it's because you're capable of performing sketch comedy, but it's important that you be able to put it down on paper. Richie could do both, but now we won't get either. Thank you for delivering the laughs.
That's all, for now.
